Device Setup
This guide explains how to set up your device to install development and testing builds of the Engineer App.
See the Builds documentation to understand which build type you should use.
Android
Android devices have no special requirements. You can install development builds directly once you have access to the build.
iOS
iOS devices require registration before they can install development builds. This is an Apple restriction that applies to all apps distributed outside the App Store.
Registering Your Device
To install development builds on an iPhone or iPad:
- Find your device UDID (see below)
- Send it to an app developer to register with Apple
- Wait for a new build - registration only applies to builds created after your device is added
Registration Only Applies to Future Builds
Once your UDID is registered, you'll only be able to install builds that were created after your device was added. Existing builds won't work on your device.
Finding Your iPhone UDID
The easiest way to find your UDID:
- Connect your iPhone to a Mac with a cable
- Open Finder (macOS Catalina or later) or iTunes (older macOS/Windows)
- Select your device in the sidebar
- Click on the device info area (where it shows your device name, capacity, etc.)
- Keep clicking until you see UDID - it will cycle through Serial Number, UDID, and other identifiers
- Right-click the UDID and select Copy
Alternatively, you can use a website like udid.io from your iPhone's Safari browser, which will guide you through installing a temporary profile to retrieve your UDID.
After Registration
Once a developer confirms your device is registered:
- Wait up to 72 hours for Apple to process the registration
- Wait for a new build to be created (or request one)
- You'll receive a link to download the build
- Install via the Expo dashboard or direct link
